Since 2012, Ideas Medioambientales has been training search dogs for conservation through the Biocan Utility project. With dead fauna detection rates of 80— 90%, they far exceed human performance in wind farms, power lines, and more. Efficiency, versatility and low cost for environmental projects.

We have been talking to you about dogs for the environment for some time, specifically since 2012, when Ideas MedioAmbiental began training search dogs for conservation as part of its project Biocan Utility. We have currently carried out work related to the control of wildlife mortality in human infrastructures, especially in wind farms and power lines; although their potential and the nature of the objectives make them perfectly extensible to railway lines, highways and highways, buildings or any other structure associated with wildlife mortality. Through specific and rigorous training with real lures of a large number of bird and bat species, Biocan Utility's search dogs have achieved success rates in detecting corpses ranging from 80-90%, compared to rates of 10-40% obtained by human searchers under similar conditions.

These patterns of effectiveness mean that dogs search for Biocan Utility have a low cost/benefit ratio compared to humans, making them very powerful and flexible tools capable of adapting to multiple projects. Thus, the competencies of search dogs in conservation can range from environmental impact assessment already mentioned, up to the monitoring of specific species, the location of nests and shelters or the management of invasive species. A wide range of possibilities offered by man's best friend... On this page you can watch a video where our person responsible for Biodiversity Area It gives us details about the use of search dogs in the detection of wildlife mortality that Ideas MedioAmbiental has been developing as part of the Biocan Utility project together with our partner Marisa Jaquero (Dog Awakening)
